Certain songs by Loretta Lynn suggested that her husband was cheating
Given that Loretta and Oliver Lynn shared a marriage, it’s understandable that some listeners assumed many of her songs were autobiographical glimpses into their life together. Interestingly, some of these tunes didn’t exactly paint Oliver as the most faithful husband.
Take, for instance, “Cheatin’ on a Cheater,” where she croons, “How long did you think that you could get by and not give yourself away / Cause all of the stories you were tellin’ me got weaker baby day by day / I was a fool for a long, long time, but I finally got wise to you.”
In another track, “Fist City,” Lynn responds to rumors of others claiming intimacy with Oliver, singing, “I’m not a’ sayin’ my baby’s a saint, ’cause he ain’t / And that he won’t cat around with a kitty / I’m here to tell you gal to lay off my man / If you don’t want to go to fist city.”
Admittedly, these lyrics don’t cast Oliver in the best light. So, the burning question arises: How did he actually feel about being portrayed in such a manner in his wife’s songs?
