3 of Loretta Lynn’s Controversial Songs That Faced Bans

During her impressive 90-year life, Loretta Lynn penned hundreds of songs, with 16 of them reaching the coveted number one spot when she recorded and released them.

In a 1987 interview with the San Diego Union, Lynn revealed that eight of her songs faced bans from country stations. Surprisingly, she saw this as a positive sign, stating, “As soon as I heard one of my songs got banned, I knew it would go to the top of the charts!”

Despite the bans, Lynn’s financial success wasn’t hindered. She had a theory about why her songs faced bans, explaining, “I was saying things girls weren’t supposed to say, but I didn’t realize they weren’t supposed to… because I got married at 13 and had kids. I hadn’t been out in the world and hadn’t realized I’d upset people.”

Among Lynn’s once-banned songs is “The Pill,” which stirred controversy for its pro-birth control message. Apart from that one, let’s shine a light on three of her remarkable songs that vividly depict the challenges faced by women.
