The Story Behind Freddy Fender’s “Secret Love”

The Story Behind Freddy Fender’s “Secret Love”

Originally crafted by Sammy Fain (music) and Paul Francis Webster (lyrics) for the 1953 musical film “Calamity Jane,” the song underwent various renditions by different artists. Doris Jane’s version was the first, and she vividly recalled how the song nearly brought her to tears upon first hearing it. Her initial run-through with the orchestra was recorded, and surprisingly, that recording was deemed the final version because Doris nailed it in one take.

In the years following, there were multiple cover versions from 1953 to 1954, including renditions by Gogi Grant and Tommy Edwards.

Kathy Kirby’s 1963 version added a twist—a remake with an up-tempo start and a unique middle eight. Released as a single, it reached #4 in the UK and #2 in Australia.

Then came Freddy Fender in 1975. His take on “Secret Love” was conceived for the album “Are You Ready For Freddy?” and recorded in the summer of that year. The single topped the Billboard C&W charts, marking Fender’s third #1 hit, and even crossed into the US Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #20.

Fast forward to 2002, and Freddy Fender decided to revisit this musical gem for his album “La Musica de Baldemar Huerta.”

What a journey! The evolution of “Secret Love” until it found its way to Freddy Fender is truly remarkable. It’s a testament to the enduring quality of this piece of music.
