By 1976, Loretta Lynn was already a towering figure in country music. Four years after the Country Music Association honored her as “Entertainer of the Year,” she added another major accolade to her collection: the Academy of Country Music, the west coast counterpart of the CMA, also named her “Entertainer of the Year.”
At this point in her career, Loretta was not only celebrated for her incredible talent but also respected for her keen ear when it came to songs and songwriters. One such songwriter would play a pivotal role in Loretta’s story: Lola Jean Dillon.
Lola Jean’s start in Nashville was anything but ordinary. She earned her first songwriting contract without ever setting foot in Music City. A friend had sent a tape of three of her songs to legendary songwriter Harlan Howard. When Howard picked up the publishing rights, Dillon bravely moved to Nashville to chase her dream. It wasn’t an easy start. Dolly Parton recorded one of her songs as an album filler, but without any singles, Dillon wasn’t earning much. To make ends meet, she even worked at Harlan Howard’s publishing company, answering the phone while he was between secretaries.
Despite the small beginnings, Dillon was determined to have her music reach the right ears. She had been sending songs to Loretta Lynn’s office but worried that none were actually reaching the singer herself. One day, she decided to seek advice from a friend who worked as Owen Bradley’s secretary at MCA Records — Owen being Loretta’s longtime producer. As Dillon waited on hold, she was stunned to hear a familiar voice on the other end: it was Loretta Lynn herself! After talking for a while, Loretta asked Dillon to bring over a tape right away.
Among the songs on that tape was “When the Tingle Becomes a Chill,” which Loretta immediately recognized as special. She recorded it, and the song became a #2 hit in 1975. Recognizing Dillon’s talent and potential, Loretta signed her to her own publishing company, “Coal Miner’s Music.”
It wasn’t long before Dillon wrote another song for Loretta, a tune that would become one of Lynn’s signature hits: “Somebody Somewhere.” When Loretta recorded the song, she invited Dillon into her office to hear the performance. Dillon was overwhelmed by the emotion and power in Loretta’s rendition. Sensing the song’s potential, Loretta suggested a quick release, noting that if the song moved the writer so deeply, it would likely touch listeners as well.
Her instincts were spot-on. “Somebody Somewhere” shot to #1 on November 13, 1976, marking Loretta’s ninth solo Billboard chart-topper. Over her remarkable career, she would go on to achieve 11 number one singles as a solo artist and five additional chart-topping hits in duets with Conway Twitty.
Looking back on the song, Loretta quipped, “If that wasn’t a great jukebox song, somebody somewhere wasn’t listenin’ too good!”
