Gene Watson’s ‘Farewell Party’: Bringing to Mind Goodbye Sadness

Originally written by Lawton Williams and first recorded in 1960, with a subsequent rendition by Little Jimmy Dickens a year later, Watson’s version of “Farewell Party” was released in February 1979 as the second single from his album “Reflections.” Reaching Number 5 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, the song became synonymous with Gene Watson’s musical identity. In tribute to its success, Watson even named his band the Farewell Party Band.
