Carrie Underwood recently opened up about the story behind one of her most iconic songs, “Before He Cheats,” and what it has come to mean to fans over the past 20 years. The American Idol star revealed that she almost didn’t record the track for her first album after winning season 4, despite it becoming one of the defining hits of her career.

Back in 2005, Carrie was nervous about releasing “Before He Cheats.” She admitted that there were some reservations at the time, mainly because she wanted to maintain the wholesome image she had built while competing on American Idol.
“I remember even when we were talking about recording that song, it was kind of like, ‘Oh, is this too aggressive? Is this too…’” she told People. “I was like a sweet farm girl on [American Idol] — and I hope that’s who I still am — but it was almost, ‘Maybe we don’t do this song.’”
Despite those doubts, Carrie went ahead and released the song, which went on to appear on her debut album, Some Hearts. The track received critical acclaim and quickly became a fan favorite. Even two decades later, it remains one of her most beloved songs, with audiences still performing along to its rebellious lyrics.

“Everybody loved it so much, we went for it and it … worked,” Carrie said. “20 years later, we still see people perform it, and it’s a lot of fun.”
Though Carrie Underwood has countless hits to her name, “Before He Cheats” holds a special place in her career — not just for its success, but also for the story behind its release and the connection it continues to have with her fans.
