What was supposed to be a weekend of music, laughter, and memories turned into heartbreak in Salt Lake City.
Twenty-three-year-old Ava Ahlander, a lifelong music lover who had traveled all the way from Seattle to Utah to see Post Malone perform, tragically lost her life in what authorities are calling a freak accident at the Redwest Music Festival. The incident happened so suddenly and unexpectedly that even first responders described it as unimaginable.

The tragedy occurred at the Utah State Fairpark as the crowd was being evacuated due to a powerful storm sweeping through the area. What began as an evening of country and pop performances under the open sky quickly turned chaotic as strong gusts of wind tore across the festival grounds.
Ava and her friends were heading to their car for shelter when disaster struck. According to witnesses and police reports, a massive thirty-foot plank was ripped loose from a nearby construction site. The wind sent it flying through the air, striking Ava and her vehicle. In an instant, the joy of the night turned into panic, fear, and screams.
Emergency crews rushed her to a nearby hospital, but her injuries were too severe. Her family confirmed that after doctors found no brain activity, she was kept on life support long enough for them to say their goodbyes. On Monday morning, her uncle Bobby Ahlander announced the heartbreaking news. “She just always loved having fun. It has been excruciating. The grief and the sorrow are overwhelming. It is just such a huge loss.”
It is almost impossible to make sense of something so random and cruel. One moment she was laughing and enjoying herself with friends, and the next she was gone. Even in her final moments, Ava’s caring spirit shone through. Her family decided to donate her organs, giving others the gift of life. As they wrote on the GoFundMe set up to help with funeral expenses, “Even in her passing, Ava continues to give the gift of life to others as an organ donor, a final act of generosity that truly reflects her caring nature.”

Her story has touched people across the country. Messages flooded social media from strangers who never met Ava but were moved by her story. “What a gorgeous girl taken way too soon,” one comment read. Another added, “She just wanted to see her favorite artist and have a good time. This is absolutely heartbreaking.”
Police reported that the plank came from scaffolding being used at a nearby construction site. The investigation is ongoing, but authorities have described it as a freak accident caused by extreme weather conditions. Southport Police Chief Todd Coring called it tragic and unavoidable, explaining that no one could have predicted how dangerous the winds would become.
Ava’s uncle described her as a beautiful soul whose kindness, warmth, and adventurous spirit touched everyone around her. Born and raised in American Fork, Utah, she had moved to the Pacific Northwest after college, where she fell in love with the ocean and the outdoors. Friends say she always chased joy wherever she went—whether at a concert, on a road trip, or exploring the coast on a hike.
Ava lived with light in her heart, and her laughter could fill a room. While her family is still grieving, they are determined to celebrate her spirit. “Ava was an absolute delight of a human being. She had the best smile. Everyone loved her,” her uncle wrote on Facebook.
The Ahlander family plans to hold a celebration of life later this month in her hometown, surrounded by friends and family who loved her most.
No one ever expects a concert to be their last. Yet even in tragedy, Ava’s story remains one of love, generosity, and a deep connection to music that touched her life and the lives of others. Though her time on earth was cut tragically short, her light, her laughter, and her song will never fade.
