Duck Dynasty star John Godwin recently appeared on the Duck Call Room podcast to share the story of his twin granddaughters’ early arrival.
Godwin’s daughter, Johanna, was expecting twin girls. At first, everything seemed fine, but she grew worried when her blood pressure rose to 160/105. High blood pressure during pregnancy can signal preeclampsia, a condition that can be dangerous for both the mother and the babies if not treated.
Johanna went to the hospital, hoping doctors could manage her condition and delay the birth. But with preeclampsia, delivering the babies early is often the safest choice for both mom and children.
She soon found herself in that situation. She called Godwin and his wife, Paula, saying, “‘Y’all need to get up here, y’all fixin’ to have grandkids.”
Godwin admitted he went “over the speed limit a little bit” to reach Johanna before she was taken into the operating room. Paula, however, thought he could go faster.
“Paula looked at me, and she’s doing the point down the road,” Godwin said. “She hit the flasher button and I mashed on it. And we got there in 40 minutes.”
Even so, they didn’t make it in time to see Johanna before her C-section.
How Are John Godwin’s Twin Granddaughters Doing Since Their Birth?
John Godwin’s granddaughters, Cassandra and Isabella, were born in mid-December. On December 22, Godwin shared an update on Facebook:
“Well, the Babies are here. Earlier than we wanted but they are doing great!!“
Because they were born prematurely, the girls have been in the NICU.
Fortunately, Johanna’s condition improved after the delivery. She needed magnesium and looked pale for a couple of days, but she’s now doing much better.
As for Cassandra and Isabella, they’re growing stronger and may be able to come home soon. Johanna shared an update on December 28:
“Both are off cpap, light blankets, and feeding tubes! We are working on eating and gaining weight, and monitoring their oxygen and hearts as they learn to do all the things they need to do to come home. They are excelling in everything and we are hopeful that maybe we are looking at coming home very soon!“
