Toby Keith had a special place in his heart for the University of Oklahoma (OU). Hailing from Oklahoma himself, Toby was a die-hard fan of OU football. His daughter, Krystal, shared a story about how Toby started selling Cokes at the stadium as a kid just so he could watch the games.
When it came time for Toby’s three children to go to college, there was no question where they would end up. Krystal recalled that her dad was adamant about supporting OU with his money, and all three kids proudly became Sooners.
“He bled crimson, and I guess it’s genetic,” Krystal joked.
Toby Keith passed away on February 5, 2024, after a long battle with stomach cancer. OU’s president, Joseph Harroz Jr., paid tribute to Toby’s deep ties to Oklahoma and his unwavering commitment to giving back.

“Throughout his illustrious career, he remained rooted in his Oklahoma upbringing, choosing to live in the state that shaped him and giving back generously to his fellow Oklahomans. As a lifelong Sooner, Toby’s passion for the crimson and cream made him a cherished figure within Sooner Nation, where he proudly shared his love for the university and its community.”
In a touching gesture, OU Football honored Toby during their Spring game on April 20. They painted Toby’s name and image on the 25-yard line in the classic crimson color.
OU posted a photo of the tribute on social media, saying, “Honoring an Oklahoma legend. We love you and miss you every day, TK.”
This tribute is a beautiful reminder of Toby Keith’s lasting impact on the OU community and beyond.
